District Attorney Warns of "Robo-call" Scam

District Attorney Steve Cooley warns of a scam involving recorded calls asking for bank account numbers and other personal identification.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - District Attorney Steve Cooley warned Tuesday about a "robo-call" scam aimed a harvesting banking information.

The "robo-calls" -- recordings -- say there's a computer problem and ask the person who answers the call to "confirm" banking account numbers and other keys to cash, such as debit and, credit and personal identification numbers, according to the District Attorney's Office.

"Consumers need to be extremely wary of telephone calls requesting sensitive information about banking or credit cards," Cooley said. "Legitimate banks and financial institutions do not call their customers to request personal identifying information or discuss banking network problems."

Cooley said people should call police if they believe they were targeted in the scam.
