City Council to Consider Contract With Police Bargaining Unit

The new contract will require for the first time the police union to pay a full employees share of their retirement plan.

The Glendora city council will consider a new contract with its police officers association that would require for the first time the union to pay a full employees share of its retirement plan.

The council may approve the agreement between the city and the police bargaining unit at a special meeting 2 p.m. Tuesday in the City Hall chambers, 116 E. Foothill Blvd.

Previously, Police Chief Rob Castro had been the only sworn officer in the police department paying the full retirement contribution.

The contract would require the union to pay the full 9 percent of its employee contribution of the CalPERS pension plan by July 2013.  The three-year contract is expected to have a net savings of $129,331.

“Until now the city had been paying their full 9 percent and with this contract, the union would be paying that,” said Interim Human Resources Director Bob Blackwood. The 9 percent contribution would be reached through three 3 percent steps.

Coming off of a five-year contract, the Police Officers Association is the first of two sworn bargaining units to reach a new contract agreement with the city, said Blackwood.

The General Management Association and the Glendora Municipal Employees Association have been paying their full eight percent of PERS contribution for over a year. The city’s department directors have been paying their employee’s contribution for the past two years.
