CHP: Car Seats Save Young Lives

California Highway Patrol officials will host a car seat event.

Child safety seats save thousands of young lives every years, according to California Highway Patrol officials.

But it is important that seats be properly installed. To continue to promote their use and help San Gabriel Valley residents ensure the seats are securely set in vehicles, the CHP is hosting a free child passenger safety seat check-up event Sept. 17.

The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Walmart, 80 Rio Rancho Road, in Pomona.

“Every year, hundreds of children are either killed or seriously injured in motor vehicle collisions,” wrote Kerri Rivas, a CHP spokeswoman. “Studies have shown child safety seats can reduce fatal injury by 72 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers ages 1-4.”

The Baldwin Park Area CHP office, which services highways in the Glendora area, and in conjunction with the Pomona Police Department, will offer the seat check-up. Trained, certified CPS technicians/officers will be inspecting child seats and offering traffic safety information.

“The goal of this event is to educate parents on the proper installation and use of child passenger seats,” Rivas said.

Inspections will be done by appointment only. To set up an appointment, Rivas asks participants to call the CHP, Baldwin Park Area office, at (626) 338-1164.
