Child Hospitalized in Collision on Glendora Avenue

Father of the very young child reportedly drunk behind the wheel, police said.

A Good Samaritan helped officers locate a DUI suspect after he crashed his car, took his child from the vehicle and fled on foot.

The very young child was taken to an area hospital as a precaution, but no significant injuries were reported in the solo crash. Damage to the car was described as "substantial" by police. The child was in a car seat.

The driver was taken into custody.

The collision was reported around 7:42 p.m. on Glendora Avenue near Ronwood Street. The driver was traveling northbound when he lost control of the car. It jumped the curb on the east side of the road, knocked down a light pole and damaged a chain link fence, said Lieutenant James DeMond.

The man took his young child out of the car and fled northbound. A witness to the crash followed the man while police were en route to the scene. The driver was able to run to Mauna Loa Avenue when officers found him, but the man refused to stop.

"He was arrested. There was a minor altercation," DeMond said.

Booking information was not yet available, but the driver is expected to be booked on suspicion of hit and run, DUI hit and run and causing a traffic collision with injuries, DeMond said.
