Checkpoints, Patrols Net Nearly 600 Arrests, Up in 2011
Nearly 90 more arrests made over last year in a massive effort to curb DUIs, remove unlicensed drivers from the road.
Authorities report 598 arrests countywide during the Dec. 16 to Dec. 18 Avoid the 100 DUI checkpoints deployments and routine traffic enforcement, up from 510 such arrests a year ago in the same 48-hour period.
Data is still being collected and the number may increase, authorities said.
The checkpoint effort Glendora partnered in Friday, Dec. 16 netted nearly 20 arrests for unlicensed or suspended drivers, while netting arrests for various violations including an arrest for DUI involving drugs, said Wendy Brewer, community service officer for Glendora Police.
Part of the Avoid the 100 Los Angeles County (East) DUI Task Force, the department partnered with Azusa, Covina, La Verne, and Pomona.
All regularly scheduled traffic and patrol officers will focus efforts at stopping and arresting DUI drivers during their normal shifts. Multiple/DUI Driver’s License Checkpoints, Multi Agency DUI Task Force operations and local Roving DUI patrols are set region-wide during 17-day Winter Holiday Campaign.
A DUI checkpoint will be scheduled for the city of Azusa Friday, Dec. 30
A DUI patrol will be scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 31 and will be coordinated by the cities of Glendora, Pomona, Claremont, La Verne, Covina, Azusa, Irwindale, including the CHP and LAPD.
Funding for the “Avoid” program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
