Safety helmet likely saved his life.

Police said a safety helmet likely saved the boy's life.

The accident occurred when the boy apparently lost control of the bike and veered into traffic.

The bicycle was damaged, police said.

The accident happened quickly and there was nothing the motorist could do to avoid the accident, Caldwell said.

He said that many kids don’t think they have to wear helmets. But they are required in California and the headgear has saved lives.

Glendora Police have a program in which a warning citation is sent to parents of young bicyclists caught on their bikes without a helmet. If they get caught again, they receive a citation and demand to appear in court.
