Big Rig Goes Up in Flames on 210 Freeway

Carpool lanes will remain closed until 7 p.m. Wednesday.

A fiery big rig crash in Irwindale closed the 210 freeway in both directions early Wednesday morning.

A 32-year-old Rancho Cucamonga man was driving a big rig carrying non-flammable concrete slurry westbound on the 210 freeway when at about 3:30 a.m., he fell asleep. The truck drifted across two traffic lanes and the carpool lane before crashing into the concrete center divider near Irwindale Avenue, according to a California Highway Patrol written statement.

The fuel tank eventually ignited and flames soon engulfed the tractor of the truck. The driver was able to escape uninjured from the truck before it was covered in flames.

All lanes in both directions of the 210 freeway were shut down during the cleanup. While officers eventually opened lanes, they estimate that the carpool and fast lanes of the eastbound and westbound sides of the freeway will remain closed until after 7 p.m.
