Low-Flying Jet Startles Some Glendora Residents

Military jet was part of 16 different Fourth of July events across SoCal.

A lumbering military jet made a low and slow pass over Glendora Wednesday night, scaring a few residents as it made its way to La Verne and beyond.

A concerned citizen e-mailed Glendora Patch this morning and said the jet looked like it was going to land on them, because it was flying so low and that some drivers stopped along Route 66 to watch the massive jet as it flew overhead.

The jet was spotted a little after 7 p.m. The C-17 Globemaster, which came from March Air Reserve base in Riverside, was part of 16 different Fourth of July events across the Southland, according to Jeannette Vagnozzi, La Verne city treasurer.

"We were in the path from the Rose Bowl. Then it flew over our stadium and then it flew over Rancho Cucamonga and then it flew to Redlands," Vagnozzi said.

The city had to get clearance from the Federal Aviation Administration for the flyover. The jet was flown by an Air Force reserve crew from the 729th Airlift Squadron. The Air Force sometimes uses these types of events as training missions, Vagnozzi said.
