DUI Checkpoint Scheduled Near Covina

CHP will conduct a sobriety checkpoint Saturday.

A sobriety checkpoint will be coming to an unincorporated area of Covina Saturday, in time for the Memorial Day weekend.

The checkpoint and driver's license check will start May 26 from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Drivers can expect to be warned ahead of time by informational signs alerting them to the checkpoint. Once detained, officers will spend a few moments explaining the purpose of the checkpoint, according to a CHP press release.

Establishing checkpoints in areas with identified DUI problems and detaining drivers for a limited time helps to assure authorities conform to the guidelines,  and that checkpoints can reduce the volume of drunk drivers from the road, according to CHP officials. However, CHP officials state arrest numbers do not rise dramatically.

If traffic volumes are too high, then every third or fifth vehicle will be stopped to ensure objectivity, officials said.
