Charity Event Draws Big-Name Sports Legends

Anti-hunger organization hosted its annual charity golf tournament recently and drew notable athletes from across the sports spectrum.

A few big names in the sporting world were among the notable guests at the third annual Sowing Seeds for Life golf tournament at the Sierra La Verne Country Club, Sept. 22.

The annual charity event allows people from around the area the chance to play golf while helping to eliminate hunger across America and get a chance to meet some big name stars.

Former Lakers Assistant Coach Frank Hamblen, legendary Hall of Famer Bill Sharman, former Lakers player George Lynch and legendary horse racing announcer Trevor Denman were in attendance, with the latter two taking part in a roundtable interview with Los Angeles Times sports columnist and former sports editor Bill Dwyre.

The charity was founded by Glendora resident Vicki Brown, who is the CEO of DPI Labs, a prominent multimillion La Verne aerospace company.

“I’m just proud to be the one who watches all this happen,” she said in a press release.

Brown is a member of Glenkirk Presbyterian Church, which gave her, among four others, $100 to create something that could benefit the community. She became inspired to start a food pantry of her own after volunteering at an L.A. area pantry.

The grand prize of the night was a chance to ride in a Gulfstream GII private jet that seats 12 for a flight to such locales as Las Vegas, Napa Valley or San Francisco.

Sowing Seeds for Life is a non-profit organization provides food for people in difficult situations. Sowing Seeds for Life (SSFL) began distributing food in December 2007 to some 100 people a month in the La Verne area and now serves more than 6,000 a month.

The next tournament will be held at the Glendora Country Club Oct. 8, 2012.
