Movies in the Park to Pay Homage to Glendora’s Gumby Connection

Gumby, the popular stop motion animation character, will be featured in a short clip during Glendora's Movies in the Park series.

Many people don’t know that Gumby, the green, elastic stop motion clay figure from the popular animated series of the 50s and 60s, once called Glendora home.

Created by animator Art Clokey in the early 50s, The Gumby Adventure Series followed Gumby and his friend, Pokey, the talking orange pony, through adventures that seemingly took them anywhere they wanted to go – to the moon and other far-off lands.

But the place where many of Gumby’s adventures were born was in a studio in Glendora, where Clokey Studios moved to in 1960.

To pay tribute to Gumby’s Glendora roots, the Glendora Rotary Club’s Movies in the Park will include a brief Gumby clip at the beginning of each movie. 

The series showed its first film, Madagascar 3, at Finkbiner Park’s Bandshell July10. The screening included a surprise visit from Gumby.

All movies will play at nightfall at Finkbiner Park’s Bandshell, 160 N. Wabash Ave. The following movies are scheduled to show for the remainder of the Movies in the Park series:

July 17- ET

July 24-Wreck It Ralph

July 31- Hotel Transylvania

Aug. 7- Rise of the Guardians
