Memorial Day 2013: Fairmount Cemetery Service Honors Azusa Councilman

Uriel Macias, an Azusa city councilman and Navy Reserve Lieutenant being deployed to Afghanistan, will be the keynote speaker at this year's ceremony.

In a historic resting place for Azusa and Glendora’s first pioneers, the community will honor the nation’s fallen heroes in the 137th annual Memorial Day ceremony 11:30 a.m. Monday at Fairmount Cemetery, 301 Baldy Vista Dr., Glendora.

This year’s Memorial Day keynote speaker is Uriel Macias, an Azusa city councilman and Navy Reserve Lieutenant who will be deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan May 31.

Lt. Macias is a native of Azusa and currently serves as Mayor Pro-Tem of Azusa. He has served on the Azusa City Council since 2007. Macias will assist with Operation Enduring Freedom during his deployment in Afghanistan.

Macias enlisted in the Navy Reserve following 9/11. He is married with four children, the youngest being a newborn son. The VFW, American Legion and Boy Scout Troop 489 will also participate.

Oakdale Memorial Park will also host its annual Memorial Day service Monday. The ceremony, coordinated by the American Legion Post 180 in Azusa, begins at 9:30 a.m.
