July 5, 1936: Smoking Banned in Forest

Offenders faced jail time.

In an effort to protect the Angeles National Forest from fires, forest service guards and patrolmen began arresting smokers caught lighting up in the forest.

The Glendora Press reported that eight arrests had been made for the offense. Smoking was banned in the area, except in public camps.
