Robert Voors was one of several superintendents in the nation to considered for 2013's National Superintendent of the Year.

Robert Voors, superintendent for Glendora Unified School District, was recently named a semifinalist for the 2013 National Superintendent of the Year award by the National Association of School Superintendents.

Voors, who has served as Glendora Unified’s superintendent for three years, was selected as a semifinalist with Robert Garguilo from the Folsom District in Folsom, NJ.

The five finalists for the award were:

Jim Capolupo,   Springfield District,  Delaware County, PA
Sonny Da Marto,  Turlock District,  Turlock, CA
Don Haddad,  St. Vrain Valley District,  Long Mont, CO.
Sandra Smyser,  Eagle County District, Eagle County, CO.
Brett Stanton, Haralson County District,   Tallapoosa, GA

Mark Edwards of Mooresville, N.C. was chosen as the winner of the 2013 award.

Voors’ 31-year career in education includes 18 years in Temple City and 10 years in Baldwin Park before coming to Glendora Unified to serve as the district’s superintendent.

Voors credited the work of faculty and staff for the district’s accomplishments during his tenure, including Glendora High School being named by US News and World Report as one of the top 1,000 schools nationwide and the College Board identifying GUSD as an advanced placement district of distinction.

“This is really a nice honor (to be considered), but it is truly a reflection of the excellent work of others in the district,” Voors said in an e-mail to Patch. “Our teachers do incredible work with students every day and take great pride in their success. Our principals and support administration are great leaders and are student and teacher focused. Our classified support staff is friendly and skillful and our Board is a great reflection of the commitment of parents to a rich academic environment. You can see it's a team effort.”
