Glendora Resident Honored as Veteran of the Year

An Iraq war veteran was honored by Assemblymember Roger Hernandez for his work with veterans with PTSD.

A Glendora veteran who suffered from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder from his service in Iraq was honored as Veteran of Year for the 48th Assembly District.

Fernando Salazar, Jr. was honored during the 6th Annual Assembly Veterans Recognition Luncheon hosted by Assemblymember Roger Hernandez (D-West Covina) Thursday.

Salazar, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and President of the Citrus College Student Veterans Club, was selected from a pool of candidates for his efforts to bring awareness to veterans by encouraging them to seek treatment for PTSD.

Salazar enlisted in 2000 and served in Iraq where he endured PTSD from an explosion as a result of clearing thermal and rocket-propelled grenades. He was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal with Combat for Valor. 

Salazar graduated from the police academy, but returned to school to earn a bachelor’s degree following his service in the Marines. He is also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.  He has worked on toy, food and clothing drives to assist veterans and their families in need.

He has also been awarded the Humanitarian Medal for his work in Kenya and OIF/OEF campaign medals.
