Exotic Mosquito Spied in San Gabriel Valley, Possible Disease Agent

Officials warn residents to watch out for this pest, which is not native to the area and could transmit a variety of viruses.

Authorities are advising San Gabriel Valley residents to be on the lookout for a rare tropical mosquito that may carry disease and that was spotted near here last week.

According to the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District, the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) was identified last week in the city of El Monte.  This is how the district describes the pest:

This aggressive day-biting mosquito is very small (approx. 1/4 inch) with distinctive black and white banding.  If you think you have seen this mosquito or have received mosquito bites during daylight hours, please REPORT them and help us eliminate this threat.

The exotic mosquito, which is not native to this area, is a possible vector for dengue virus, which causes the infectious tropical disease dengue fever, in Asia, as well as eastern equine encephalomyelitis and Cache Valley viruses, which are known to cause disease in humans, according to the Altanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

If you see this mosquito, the district asks you to report it immediately.

To avoid attracting this or other mosquitos, the district advises the following:

  • Dump out standing water and store containers upside down
  • Dispose of or remove any unused containers
  • Dispose of tires stored outdoors or move them to a sheltered area
  • Drill drain holes in the bottom of tire swings or other play equipment that may collect rainwater

The District will begin a door-to-door inspection and education campaign on Sept. 14 within a quarter-mile radius of the infestation site.
