After a week of clouds and some drizzle, once again crystal clear skies greeted this year’s Remembrance Walk. This event has grown over the last 17 years to become a true community affair and brings together students, teachers and staff from throughout the district, and families from current and former Charter Oak residents and employees. 42 students representing Indian Unity, Latino Unity, Earth Club, Spanish Club, French Club, ASB, AVID, BSU, Lighthouse, Middle Eastern Unity, Filipino Unity, Boys’ Basketball, Key Club, Thespians, and Sharing Our Humanity participated in the set-up of the event as well as walked in memory of loved ones. Lending support to this year’s Remembrance Walk were school board members Robert Cruz and Brian Akers, and COUSD Director Joe Mitchell.
Groups of friends and families walked around the track, signed memory boards, visited with one another, and often made contributions to the Community Scholarship Foundation’s varying scholarship funds. Indeed, this year’s Remembrance Walk raised $2,933 in scholarship donations. Whether participants walked one or many laps, enjoyed donuts and coffee, babysat each other’s dogs (which are not allowed on the all-weather track), or simply enjoyed the sunshine, it was clear that the day provided an opportunity for loving reflection and memories.
