Taco Grill: Tacos Worth Getting Up in Your Grill

What this place lacks in space, makes up in taste.

Describing the as a hole-in-the-wall taco stand would be like describing a 1957 Corvette convertible as an old racecar missing its roof.  The tidy space with bamboo wall covering and a playful thatched roof is small and only has counter space for about eight, but what the Taco Grill lacks in seating, it makes up for in its food.

I sampled the carne asada and carnitas soft tacos ($1.39 each), a shredded beef hard taco ($1.59) the Super Nachos ($5.89) and a side of rice and beans ($1.29 each).  The soft tacos were definite winners, although they are very small.  Topped with onions, cilantro and guacamole sauce, the meats were tender, seasoned and grilled to perfection.

I ordered the hard taco at the friendly counterperson’s suggestion, but discovered I preferred the soft tacos.  Although tasty, the deep-fried taco shell grated against my health-conscious sensibilities.  It was dressed with lettuce, shredded cheese and guacamole sauce.

The aptly-named Super Nachos were a very heavy takeout box of tortilla chips, beans, shredded beef, cheddar and jack cheeses, sour cream and guacamole.  I had a hard time finding the chips under all the toppings.  In fact, I found I had to cut into the nachos with a knife and serve it with a spatula, much like a tortilla pie or casserole, because they were so thick.

Taco Grill offers two types of beans, refried and pinto.  I opted for the pinto beans, which were satisfying. The rice was well-seasoned, but a bit too salty for my taste.  They also offer burritos, combo bowls and plates, as well as tortas—a kind of Mexican sandwich.

The best part about the Taco Grill is that Tuesdays and Saturdays are 99 cent soft taco days, where you can sample every kind of soft taco they offer for under five bucks. I will definitely be returning to the Taco Grill to conduct that experiment.
