L.A., Orange Co. Gas Sees Uptick After Steady Decline

Gas prices saw a slight increase over the weekend after nearly two months of steady decline. AAA spokesperson Jeffrey Spring said a weakening dollar could bring on further increases.

Gasoline prices ticked back up this weekend after dropping steadily in L.A. and Orange County over the past two months.

Prices per gallon now average $3.78 in L.A. County and $3.76 to the south in Orange County, a low not seen since February and March of this year.

Both prices represent consistent declines of around 50 cents from two months ago except for this weekend's increase and another increase on June 20.

Gas still remains costlier than one year ago, when L.A. County averaged prices of 65.8 cents less and Orange County prices were 64 cents less per gallon.

Jeffrey Spring of the Automobile Club of Southern California said price decreases slowed in the past week as a result, in part, of a weakening dollar.

"Oil futures are traded in U.S. dollars, which means that when the dollar weakens, investors, including those holding foreign currencies, get comparatively more oil for their money," Spring said. "This makes crude oil a more attractive investment, which pressures prices upward."
