Goodwill Hunting: Thrifty Halloween Costume Ideas

Keep your Halloween budget in check with affordable costumes.

When it comes to finding your ideal Halloween costume, Goodwill stores offer unlimited possibilities for the budget conscious. With the economy still in recovery mode, why pay full price for a costume when you can find the materials to create your own for a fraction of the price?

While Halloween stores offer costumes, many are mass-produced with marked up prices. Goodwill, including its two locations in Glendora, offers affordable options for anyone to create one-of-a-kind outfits without breaking the bank. With items in every shape, size, and color _ and from various eras _ you can rest assured you will not to run into anyone wearing the exact same costume.

Some often found items at a thrift store include vintage-themed costumes - (find a fringed low-cut-frock for a 1920's flapper look, or a poodle skirt to create your Sandra Dee costume), a cowboy ensemble (jeans, belt-buckles, boots and a hat), or a back dress to create your Wicked look.

There are also plenty of secondhand children's costumes, most worn only once, or not even worn at all.

“Goodwill is a one-stop shop for costumes for the entire family. Not only is the whole process of shopping and creating costumes fun, it helps our community members,” said Shannon Halverson, PR/Marketing Manager of Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois.  “Revenues from your Halloween costume purchase fund Goodwill’s job training and career services for people in the Stateline Area.”

With a little creativity and out-of-the-box thinking, anyone can find an ideal costume for less at Goodwill, or at any thrift store. And to help you save time from sifting through all the merchandise, both Goodwill locations in Glendora have a rack just for secondhand Halloween costumes and decor.

Shopping at Goodwill helps communities. In 2011 alone, Goodwill store revenues helped deliver employment and training programs to almost 5,000 area citizens.

Go, go GPD. It is nice to be appreciated, but even better when someone acknowledges it.
