Food Network to Film at The Donut Man

Fans of the local doughnut shop are asked to show their support during the taping.

The Donut Man is no stranger to media fanfare. The local doughnut shop, famous for its fresh strawberry and peach doughnuts, has appeared on various food and travel programs, countless news articles have been written on it and blogs have given it much love.

The Food Network will pay a visit to The Donut Man and owner Jim Nakano Feb. 12.

It’s not the first time the network has paid homage to the doughnut shop.

It was featured in a 2010 program of “America’s Best,” appearing at number 6 in a list of the top 10 sweets in the country. The seasonal fruit doughnuts –  February through July for the strawberry doughnuts and August through January for the peach doughnuts – are given nearly legendary status for the quality of the fruits Nakano uses.

Nakano, who used to pick his fresh strawberries from the once abundant strawberry fields in Glendora, now heads to markets in Oxnard and Watsonville. But Nakano said he still personally handpicks the fruit for quality.
