APU to Open New Bakery, Café in Glendora

At 4 a.m. every weekday morning, bakers Bruce Blair of Glendora and Dean Gotto of Covina, head into their new bakery in Glendora, cranking out hundreds of dozens of large muffins, hamburger buns, sandwich rolls, bread and cookies.

While their freshly baked goods are shipped by truck to Azusa Pacific University’s 11 campus dining rooms, the bakers at 229 W. Foothill Blvd. are preparing to share their baked goods, pastries and desserts with the Glendora community.

The new location will also serve as the site of what will be a new place for local cuisine called Glendora Café and Bakery.  The new dine-in space will feature some of what the bakers ship to APU each morning, including assortments of bagels and croissants, as well as breakfast sandwiches, cakes, pies, cupcakes and other freshly baked goods, all baked with none of the cheap ingredients or preservatives, say Blair and Gotto.

Both Blair and Gotto are experienced bakers with 76 years of baking experience between them. Many of the employees include APU students, some of whom are pursuing careers in hospitality management.

 “Moving our bakery off campus to Glendora enables the university to better serve our growing student population, while also serving our community and generating revenue for the city,” said Roger Hodsdon, associate vice president of university services, in a press statement.

APU is shooting for a November opening date.
