Pit Bull Attacks 13-Year-Old Glendora Girl

Officer shoots Pit Bull that advanced towards him, while another hits it with his patrol car to prevent it from potentially causing harm to others.

A 13-year-old girl was injured early Monday when she was attacked by one of two Pit Bulls at her father's residence, police said.

The girl received non life-threatening wounds to her torso and an arm and was transported to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center.

One officer shot the more aggressive dog in the head in self defense as it advanced on him, but the dog was still mobile and another officer was forced to hit it with his patrol car to stop it after it fled the neighborhood.

Police received two 911 calls from residents in the 900 block of East Myrtle Avenue around 12:30 a.m. According to scanner reports, the residents may not have been clear where the screaming was coming from.

Once officers arrived, they located the home and heard the girl screaming. The 13-year-old was home alone with her 10 and 1-year-old brothers, said lieutenant Joe Ward.

"As he [the officer] gets up to the house, she's screaming something about being bit," Ward said. The officer, from the middle of the street, observed the two Pit Bulls in front of the house barking at girl through a bathroom window where she may have been tending to her wounds.

Both dogs advanced towards the officer, who backed away twice and yelled at the dogs to stop. The officer shot the most aggressive dog in the head, but it refused to go down and ran through . Two officers followed on foot through the school and nearly lost sight of the dog as it advanced towards Route 66, Ward said.

The dog made its way west and was heading towards , Ward said.

"Another officer, based upon the threat to other people, runs it over with their police car, hits it and eventually dies," Ward said.

The officer that fired on the dog and the officer that struck the dog stood by the animal as it lay on Route 66. Animal control officers from Monrovia arrived a while after to take both Pit Bulls from the area.

According to Ward, the children were at their father's home. The parents have shared custody and the father was not home at the time.

It was unclear as of publication time which one of the dogs attacked the girl. The incident is still being investigated.

Go, go GPD. It is nice to be appreciated, but even better when someone acknowledges it.
