Teen Soloist's Voice Impresses Audiences

Fifteen-year-old Glendora resident Sofie Thurston is making her mark as a performing artist.

Sofie Thurston is just 15 years old and already she’s earning recognition for her singing voice.

The second soprano from Glendora competed at the 55th annual Monterey Jazz Festival in April with her fellow peers at the L.A. County High School for the Arts, earning second place.

But even as a child, Thurston was turning heads with a voice beyond her years. At age 6, her mother enrolled her in vocal lessons and she was soon appearing in stage productions across the Southland, including Annie, Gypsy and Snow White.

Before attending LACHSA, Thurston went to Cullen Elementary School and Goddard Middle School.

According to the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, Thurston had to audition to enroll at LACHSA, a performing arts specialty school on the Cal State Los Angeles campus.

The audition required her to tackle Duke Ellington’s number ‘Satin Doll.’ Although she never performed jazz before her audition, she nailed the number perfectly. Today, Thurston enjoys singing jazz, especially scatting.

Catch more of Thurston singing in this clip of her performance of “All Things Bright and Beautiful,” or by checking out her Youtube channel.

Go, go GPD. It is nice to be appreciated, but even better when someone acknowledges it.
