Despite Setbacks, Glendora War Memorial Still on its Way

Officials state about $98,000 generously donated by community.

In the coming months, Glendora's War Memorial should slowly begin to materialize after a few setbacks forced the delay of its construction.

Granite was at the center of the delay. Orders of the igneous rock had to be sent back twice due to cracks discovered in the samples delivered, said Chris Jeffers, Glendora city manager.

Another vendor was chosen and granite samples should arrive within the next month, or two for inspection.

In the meantime, other preparations have been made, with job tasks being organized and delegated with the construction companies and city crews who have offered to donate their services to build the memorial, Jeffers said.

The War Memorial Committee has approved of the font choice and layout for engraving of the granite.

The city has received $98,000 for the cost of the War Memorial. That funding was collected from the donation boxes that peppered city businesses and have also received an $11,000 donation. The donated labor offers are estimated at $25,000 to $30,000. The total cost for construction is estimated at $140,000.

"At this point we might be light about $10,000 to $15,000. It is hard to say until we get the materials all purchased. The committee believes that more donations will flow once people see the actual work get underway," Jeffers said.

The goal all along, officials said, was to make this undertaking a community effort to honor Glendora's fallen heroes and that the sheer volume in donations from the citizens is a testament to their support for the effort and those who served.

Once the granite is approved, engraving would take about five weeks to complete. During the engraving work, crews will begin removing cement currently in place and will begin installing electrical conduits, framing and installing the flag poles.

"We have never doubted the enthusiasm of our community -- residents and businesses alike -- to wanting to be part of this noble effort. I think the donations certainly validate that," Jeffers said.

Citizens can still donate. Individuals can purchase bricks for $200.  They can donate to one of the three donation levels:

  • Patriot at $7,500 or more
  • Old Glory at $5,000 to $7,499
  • Stars & Stripes at $1,500 to $4,999

These individuals will have their donations recognized by having it engraved on one of granite slabs in varying font size based on the category.
