On this Day in Glendora: June 8, 1954

49 percent of Glendora voters turn out for June primary election.

The Glendora Press reported that approximately 49 percent of Glendora voters showed up to vote at the June 8, 1954 primary election.

The new party label law, which required a candidate to cross-file with a party designation, was credited with “steering” Democratic voters toward their party candidates. In Glendora, nearly all Democratic candidates for partisan offices, except gubernatorial candidate Richard Graves, won their party’s nomination.

Republican candidates had heavy majorities in Glendora, with Republican candidate Goodwin Knight receiving a 4-to1 endorsement over Democrat Richard Graves in total votes. Republican Senator Thomas Kuchel received a 3-to-1 margin over his Democrat opponent Sam Yonty, while Congressman Pat Hillings edged Democrat John Sobieski 3 1/2 –to-1 n the Congressional race.
