On This Day in Glendora: June 2, 1954

A couple is rescued after falling 500 feet into Little Dalton Canyon.

On this day 57 years ago, a couple was hospitalized after their car plunged 500 feet into Little Dalton Canyon near the Glendora Mountain Road summit. The accident occurred on the evening of Tuesday, June 1, 1954. 

James Lockhart and Sybil Hansen were stranded on the nearly-perpendicular cliff for several hours until they were rescued by sheriff’s deputies by a cable-drawn basket early the following morning on June 2, 1954.

Lockhart, who was driving vehicle, later told authorities he lost control while trying to maneuver the narrow turns on the road. 

Following the rescue, the June 4, 1954 edition of the Glendora News reported that both Lockhart and Hansen were in “very good” condition at the Inter-Community Hospital. Lockhart suffered a fractured skull and eye lacerations, while Hansen suffered a concussion and multiple bruises.
