Happy National Left-Handers Day! Lefties Unite and Celebrate

Raise your hand if you’re left handed. Today is your day.

Aug. 13 marks the 23rd annual Left-Handers Day, according to the officials Left-Handers Club website.

While some might find it an odd thing to commemorate, the day is meant to send a message to manufacturers about the development of left-handed products and to encourage research on left-handedness, according to club members.

“Since its formation the Club has gone from strength to strength with members all over the world and is highly regarded as the foremost pressure group and advice centre on all aspects of left-handedness,” according to the website.

Lefties have long had to fit into a predominantly right-handed world, according to club members. Items from stick-shift cars to everyday scissors, force many to into sometimes awkward situations, they said.

And there was a time when being left-handed meant being labeled or the subject of a number of myths, as explained by a recent Psychology Today article written by Christian Jarrett, Ph.D.
