Azusa/Glendora Soroptimists Helping Make Girls' Prom Dreams Come True

My Sister's Closet is currently collecting special occasion dresses for a special cause.

The dresses collected in conjunction with The Azusa Unified School DIstrict, Assistance Outreach League of Covina and the Azusa/Glendora Soroptimists will be donated to underprivileged girls in the community desiring to attend their high school prom, organizers said in a press release.

The dresses are provided at no cost to the girls to lessen the financial burden, organizers said.

Silvana Cavazos, program coordinator for the Azusa Unified School DIstrict's Family Resource Center created My Sister's Closet to aid teen girls.

“I was lucky to have 4 sisters to share clothes.  My family, like many, was struggling to make ends meet without the extras like prom,” Cavazos said.

Donation sites are located at the Azusa Unified District Family Resource Center, 546 South Citrus Avenue in Azusa and at the Azusa Pacific University Social Department, 901 East Alosta Avenue.

The donated dresses should be lightly used.

Jewelry, shoes, wraps, new makeup, hair accessories and evening bags are also accepted.

The dress giveaway will take place at Azusa Pacific University on Saturday, March 1, 2014. The giveaway will be conducted in two sessions starting at 9 a.m. Attendees must have a reservation.
