Aug. 28, 1968: Canyon Blaze Partially Contained

A raging Glendora fire seen from Los Angeles is partially contained, on this day in 1968.

Determined firefighters rushed to contain a fatal blaze that had already claimed the lives of seven teen firefighters and one crew leader in Glendora, reported the Eugene Register-Guard on Aug. 28, 1968.

The blaze , which could be seen as far as Los Angeles, was 50 percent contained, said firefighters. The flames burned over 18,000 acres inside a 23.mile perimeter and destroyed dozens of cabins and an abandoned lookout tower on Pine Mountain, reported the newspaper.
