Aug. 21, 1917: Glendora Women Knit Garments for WWI Soldiers

A call for garments for overseas soldiers spurs local women to form knitting circles.

During a Glendora Woman’s Club meeting on Aug. 21, 1917, women were called to help provide needed garments for soldiers overseas fighting in Europe during WWI. Speakers at the meeting said it was their aim to “mobilize every woman who can knit and teach the rest how,” and ship sweaters, mufflers and socks, according to the Glendora Gleaner.

After the meeting, 50 women immediately went to work to form knitting circles. Local residents also donated wool to the cause.
