Kinkade’s sudden death on Friday has sparked interest in the artist’s work.
With the sudden death of the commercially successful 54-year-old painter Thomas Kinkade Friday, renewed interest and appreciation in the artist has grown. Kinkade’s luminous and tranquil paintings of idyllic landscapes and seascapes were mainstream successes in art galleries across the nation. There are picturesque scenes of lush gardens, cottages and churches that are featured in about 10 million homes nationwide. While his sentimental pieces were large-scale commercial successes, Kinkade, whose death was attributed to natural causes, was often criticized by the art community. Art critics called his work “schlocky” and formulaic, according to the Los Angeles Times. But despite his critic, Kinkade, born in Placerville, Calif., called …

South Pasadena resident and filmmaker John McDonald highlights Route 66 in his latest documentary, Pipes & Sticks on Route 66.
San Gabriel Valley Resident and filmmaker John McDonald will be highlighting the Mother Road in his latest documentary, Pipes & Sticks on Route 66, which he plans to start filming in April. He'll be following five bagpipers and drummers from around the country in their quest to perform along the historic street. First stop will be Chicago with the tour ending in Santa Monica. A portion of Route 66 runs through Glendora, although Mcdonald said he is unsure if Glendora will make it onto the final cut of the documentary, "especially since so many great bagpipers are Glendora High School graduates" and much of what is filmed "ends up on the cutting room floor." Mcdonald writes: U.S. Highway 66—popularly known as Route 66 or the Mother Road—…

A fall down a slope on Mount Baldy compelled Glendora author Greg Morton to pursue his passion for writing.
Although he had been writing poetry for 18 years, it took a near-tragic accident for Glendora resident Greg Morton, 39, to finally tackle his first novel. On a snowy January day in 2008, Morton attempted to climb the summit of Mount Baldy. During the hike, Morton found himself clinging to a slippery, icy slope after falling 50 feet, slipping slowly further down before San Bernardino Search and Rescue airlifted him to safety. Thankfully, Morton wasn’t injured, but the terrifying accident compelled Morton to finally pick up a pen and begin what he says is his true calling – writing. The result—two self-published mystery adventure novels, The Fury of the Bear and To Catch a Fox. Morton’s first novel The Fury of the Bear, publish in 2010, …

A middle school student snapped a cellphone photo of a fellow student as she changed in a school locker room. Why smartphones are causing new problems for schools.
The mother of a 12-year-old special needs student at Sandburg Middle School says her daughter’s photo was taken as she undressed in the school’s locker room for P.E. last Thursday. The mother, who did not want to be identified in fear of disclosing her daughter’s identity, said another student took the photo with a cellphone without her daughter's knowledge. Sandburg principal Scott Bell acknowledged the incident did occur, and that several students came forward to alert the teacher of the incident. Bell said within 10 to 15 minutes of the photo being taken, school staff confiscated the cellphone from the student and immediately deleted the photo. According to Bell, the student who took the photo has been reprimanded, although he would not…

With a lack of Glendora art venues, artists from the Foothill Artist Collective are hoping to nurture interest in the area’s growing art scene.
With few art galleries and performing arts centers, Glendora artists have struggled to create a more visible presence. But a group of local artists are trying to generate interest in the city’s small but growing art scene. Through fundraising efforts, the Foothill Artist Collective is aiming to provide more venues for local artists to show and sell their work. “We have a college and a university in Azusa with strong arts programs,” said collective member Lynn Hendricks. “But Glendora has no art venues.” Hendricks pointed to cities such as Claremont and Pasadena where farmers markets and art galleries have offered the closest opportunities for artists. “But it would be great for Glendora artists to share their work in the city where they …
