Press Box: Baseball, Softball & Golf

Despite some schools being on Spring Break, there was plenty of sports action this week.

Citrus Baseball: The Owls (14-15, 9-7) utilized three long balls, including two solo homers by Freshman Shane Fraijo , then hit the road for the re-match at the home of the Wildcats on Thursday and lost 10-3. They bounced back with a home win on Saturday over No.7 Bakersfield College. Freshman starting pitcher Richard Perry threw a complete game shutout while Fraijo continued to hit the ball well going 2 for 4 with a run and 3 RBI's.

Citrus Softball: After opening the week with a 3-2 win over Glendale on Monday, the Owls (17-10, 9-1) recorded another WSC Blue Division win in a home game on Tuesday against L.A. Valley College. Citrus made LA Valley pay for their six errors with 10 runs in just four innings of work. Sophomore Annette Diaz had a big game going 2 for 3 with 2 runs, while fellow sophomore Kimberly Lopez went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI's while Destinee Quinn pitched all five shut-out innings giving up just three hits along the way. The Owls swept L.A. Mission on the road Thursday by scores of 11-0 and 20-8 and finished their road trip in Pasadena Friday afternoon with a 9-0 win.

Citrus Men’s Golf: Even though the team had a rough outing on Monday at the WSC Neutral Site Event at Elkins Ranch Golf Course where they shot a combined 395 for a last place finish, first year Coach Trip Horton said the chemistry between team members is good and the rough start to the season can be attributed to players being freshmen and not being that familiar with courses.

“They are all maturing together, next year they will do a ton better and they are not out of it yet,” said Horton.

This year was Citrus’ turn to pick the site for the upcoming conference championships which will be held at Los Serranos in Chino Hills. Before that, they have to get through today’s match-up with Bakersfield at the Rio Bravo Country Club.

In Glendora High School Baseball news: The Tartans opened up a new week of pool play at the Apache Tournament in Arcadia High Monday morning with an impressive 10-0 blowout win over Bonita. They lost a close one to Temple City the following day 4-3, but rebounded to earn fifth place honors in the tourney with a 15-5 victory against Monrovia on Wednesday. Glendora (9-4-1, 4-1) now sits atop the standings in first place of the Baseline League. Next up is another League game at Los Osos on Wednesday afternoon.

In Glendora softball news: The Tartans (8-5, 1-2) find themselves in fifth place in the Baseline, they were off last week but are back in action starting today in a home game against Alta Loma at 3:15 PM

In St Lucy’s Softball news: After opening up the week on Tuesday with a 9-4 win over Sierra League rival South Hills at home, the Regents (5-7, 4-4) traveled the six and a half miles for the rematch with the Huskies on Thursday. The Huskies prevailed 5-3 in a game in which the Regents committed a number of costly metal errors during the late innings including having a runner thrown out and one called out for failing to touch first base.

“Today was worse than the 10-0 game we lost (to Chino Hills),” said Regents coach  Ryan Nuveman. “Even though it was closer, we had plenty of opportunities which we didn’t take advantage of. We got OK pitching but they hit the ball pretty well.”

St Lucy’s will try to get their league mark over .500 on April 19 when they host league-leading Chino Hills.
