Kent Tapped For Vacant Commission Seat
Former commissioner and council member Terry Kent rejoins the Glendora planning commission.
Since serving one year as a replacement for council member Gary Clifford, former council and planning commission member Terry Kent will assume his former post on the city’s planning commission.
The council unanimously approved Kent’s appointment during Tuesday’s city council meeting.
Kent had served on the planning commission since 2004 before the city approached him to replace council member Clifford when the latter resigned in 2010.
Kent’s appointment completes the five-person commission, which had been running with just four members since Kent’s assignment to the city council. Kent will join commissioners Cliff Hamlow, James Prunty, Joseph Battaglia and Eric Duyshart.
According to municipal code, Kent, a 44-year resident of Glendora, is now eligible to serve two terms of office since a year has passed since his service on the commission.
The council had a choice of directly appointing Kent by putting the vacant seat to a majority vote, seeking applications and conducting interviews for the open position, or simply leaving the position vacant.
The void of a fifth commissioner had often been felt during planning commission meetings since Kent’s departure a year ago.
“When I look at Terry’s qualifications, his background and his experiences, I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this position,” said Mayor Pro Tem Gene Murabito. “I think the increased dialogue and the fact that we had a couple meetings in the recent past, where because of jobs requiring responsibilities and commissioners not being able to attend, I think we need to fill that position.”
During a May 3 Planning Commission meeting, the three present commissioners discussed zoning codes for emergency homeless shelters.
“This is a time when I feel limited and there are only three of us, and we don’t have two other people to speak to the pros and cons,” said Hamlow.
