June 26, 1931: Glendora Mountain Road Opens to Travel

The road offering the public its first scenic views from behind Mt. Baldy is now open.

The scenic views from behind Mt. Baldy had only been seen by intrepid hikers and horseback riders, but the Glendora Gleaner reported on June 26, 1931 that Glendora Mountain Road had opened to automobiles.

The newspaper reported that highway travel was open between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. daily, just in time for the July 4th weekend.

Captain George McKelvey who was in charge of the county honor camp on the road, said within 2 to 3 weeks, the road would be opened to unrestricted travel.
