UPDATE: Human Remains Discovered in South Hills Park

A hiker made the grisly discovered Monday afternoon.

Updated 3 p.m., Jan 1: The Los Angeles County Coroner's office is still assesing the remains and have not released an official update. The body has yet to be identified. 

Original: A hiker stumbled upon human remains deep within the brush in South Hills Park Monday afternoon.

At 3:34 p.m. a hiker found human bones in the wilderness area of the park, located in the 700 block of Mauna Loa Ave., and notified police.

According to Lt. Joe Ward, the remains had been there for “quite awhile” and there was no evidence of foul play. While the remains have not yet been identified, Ward added that transients frequent the park and the homeless often take refuge there.

The Los Angeles County coroner is currently assessing the remains.
