GUSD Candidate Q&A: Experience to the Board
Candidates discuss what qualifies them to the Glendora Unified School Board.
With school board elections coming up, it's important that voters know as much as they can about their candidates. At Glendora Patch, we'd like to offer voters an easily accessible and centralized place to meet each of their candidates in a weekly Q&A forum.
There are two incumbents and two newcomers vying for two empty seats. With Election Day Nov. 8, we’re giving voters the opportunity to get to know their candidates for Glendora Unified School Board.
Candidate Q&A Question #1:
There has been a lot of talk about experience being critical to becoming a member of the school board. How does your experience make you an asset on the school board?
Doris Blum
My years of service on the Board of Education and ongoing involvement in the community continually inform my decisions as a board member. I believe knowledge of the district and community is invaluable in decision making. My background:
- Board member for twenty eight years, serving on committees, visiting schools, attending programs whenever possible.
- Currently serving on the PTA boards of Glendora and Whitcomb High School and PTA Council.
- Glendora Board Member, East San Gabriel Valley Regional Occupation Program, providing Career Technical Education at GHS and WHS.
- Member of the Coordinating Council, Kiwaniannes, Chamber of Commerce Legislative Committee and other civic organizations.
- As a member of California School Boards Delegate Assembly and Legislation Chair for PTA, I have been an advocate for education legislation both locally and in Sacramento.
Cory Ellenson
I have unique skills and experience gained from auditing budgets and preparing tax returns for Ernst & Young LLP, performing legal research and drafting motions for the California Attorney General, investigating how taxpayer money was spent by the President and Treasury Secretary for the United States Senate, and arguing motions for the U.S. Treasury Department in United States Tax Court. These experiences put me in a position to greatly aid our school district in addressing budgetary constraints and interpreting both state and federal laws to ultimately provide for the best education possible for our students. For more in-depth information, please see my full resume on www.ElectCoryEllenson.com. I welcome your direct contact for further discussion. Thank you for your consideration.
Doug Ferrell
Serving on a Board of Education is truly rendering service. Having served on the Board, I have learned much and have grown in the position. The qualities I believe I bring to the Board are:
- My character and integrity.
- My team-building skills with the other members of the Board.
- My experience as a parent, having navigated the school and college systems with four children and soon with my grandchildren.
- My connections in the community, having served with many families at school, sport booster and church functions.
- My real experience as a business owner and homeowner.
Above all, I believe that selfless service is the key to being an effective Board Member. I have given my best to render that type service for twelve years.
Irene Miller
Let’s review GUSD's experience over the last ten years. Since 2000, the school board has spent over $510 million running our district. This is where my 23 years of business experience will benefit our district. My extensive business background in general accounting management, customer service/support, and employee/subcontractor supervision has given me the ability to review details and audit spending.
With these skills, I will bring management and planning to insure our tax dollars are spent responsibly. As a small business owner I am aware of the importance of making tough choices to balance spending with income.
I strongly believe that we as a school board need to be responsible with what the Glendora Taxpayer’s have given us each year.

Cory, what are your real-life experience? How are you dealing with the fact that after graduating from two prestigious schools and that after seemingly solving the world’s problems over the summers as an 11 week intern; instead of a nice office with a big prestigious Century City law firm and a flat on the Westside, you find yourself commuting to the worst part of LA to an antiseptic cubical as a Government employee and sleeping in your old room at your Mom and Dad's house. Now that’s a real life experience, that’s the real world, and fabric what will eventually make you ready to serve your fellow citizens as an elected official.

@ Concerned Parent: I see that you are in touch with the real world as you call it - most grads are finding it very difficult to find jobs after a college education! Our own son took 15 months before being hired at a job in his field of study. Many of his high school buddies are living at their parents' homes here in Glendora after college graduation. We need our school system to prepare our students for these economically hard times - if Cory who has a great resume with his internships and recent schooling experience is concerned about the issue, then we all need to listen! How many future high school grads are coming up through the ranks and will find difficulties getting jobs? Will your son or daughter or neighbor's son or daughter also be living at home after college or even during vocational school graduation? Are Blum and Ferrell aware of what's going on out here? They don't address these issues on their website...

Concerned Parent, did you know the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office is using many recent law school graduates in their "pit" to assist in the legal matters concerning the city? Were you aware these are unpaid positions? These "interns" are gaining valuable experience while assisting the city in their grave financial time of need. Would you like me to post about famous jurists that started as most do, as summer interns for every type of judge you can think of? The orchestrated hit pieces aimed at this candidate make me ill. I've never met him but will vote for him based only on these cowardly attacks and the fact he's young and is stepping forward to give to this community. Taking a few missteps is what all of us go through in the growing process, well except you I guess. I've never met Cory Ellenson but I'll draw on my own life experience, which I believe includes being able to read people pretty well, to make that decision.

Cory your new claims of vast experience are truly remarkable. Most accounting majors begin their careers working for a large accounting firm. In that position they are at the bottom of the ladder and do grunt work, there is nothing unique about it! As to arguing motions for the Treasury Deptment in court the question is how did you do that without passing the Bar and being licensed?
Let's face it, you have been called out on your qualifications because you have so greatly exaggerated them. Why don't you come clean, be honest and admit you have been funded and sponsored by the Tea Party. People will still vote for you.

He already said he wasn't a Tea Party member, what part of that is confusing you? Party isn't a part of the election, same as it has no bearing on city council elections though I remember a female candidate going out a few elections back and getting the endorsement of the local Democratic Party. Didn't help her, she still lost...again. You calling out someone time and again, as a few others do points to you being a plant for another candidate. I don't think you're fooling anyone.

Denise, you used the same argument for your other phenom Cynthia Carrasco in the spring.
A great deal of us had biting criticism of her "lack of experience" and questioned her for her "work outside The city limits"...so let's be real, both young leaders have great ideas but that isn't good enough for our city.
The truth of the matter is that both Cory and Cynthia truly show the best of Glendora...however, they need EXPERIENCE. Simply, it isn't their time yet.
So, you back your candidate again under the guise of idealistic candidate grooming and I'll back Miller and Ferrell. Cory is only right on one thing- a new voice is a good idea...miller is it for me, and at least I know she is a proud tea party member who will stand on her principles.
Lastly, Cory, I hope you answer the citizens on why you printed that candidate statement in the ballot. If this were any other race, they'd make you reprint those. Shame no one deterred you from misleading people before you made city clerk print them with our taxpayer dollars.

The list of citizens endorsing Doris Blum and Doug Ferrell is very telling and significant. Glendorans with first hand knowledge of the importance of having experienced individuals with leadership skills in governance on the Board of Education are among their many supporters. This list includes;
* four experienced Glendora council members (Mayor Doug Tessitor, Mayor Pro-Tem Gene Murabito, Councilors Karen Davis and Joe Santoro),
* past Glendora Mayors (Sue Bauer, Cliff Hamlow, Bob Kuhn),
* Citrus College Trustee President (Pat Rasmussen),
* current school superintendents and Glendora residents Dean Conklin (superintendent at Walnut Unified), Clint Harwick (superintendent at Saddleback Unified, and Catherine Nichols (superintendent at Covina Valley Unified),
* retired school superintendents and Glendora residents Clint Taylor (Temple City Unified) and Louise Taylor (Monrovia Unified),
* past Glendora PTA Council Presidents (Donna Smith and Robin Merkley),
* all members of the GUSD Board of Education (Denice Delgado, Mike Gautreau, Chuck Gomer).
I urge you to vote for Doris Blum and Doug Ferrell for re-election to the GUSD Board of Education on November 8th. They are outstanding Board members and they have the experience, wisdom, and enthusiasm we need.

Interesting, The Incumbents are being endorsed by the long time establishment political class and Cory is being endorsed by the newly elected citizens who became politically involved because of the current financial condition of our State and community. Also the argument that we should re-elect Blum and Ferrell because we need experience in this difficult financial time, have they not been on the board while these financial times have occured, by that standard they should never be removed from the board or fired because of our financial condition. Which is it?

My 83 year old father and i read the news and talk politics. He has lived here over 45 years. And ive been here my whole life. I liked the last post and had to throw my two cents in.
There is a political class in Glendora. Judy Nelson got elected because the political class endorsed her and the
machine pushed her along with Joe Santoro into their seats.
Now, Judy Nelson, since being elected has become a well-known Tea Party candidate. I'm a loyalist too but as a self-educated father i know Judy can NOW be more loyal to that than to the political class who helped get her elected. WHY? She has the official title.
Her difference with Cory? She has over 25 years EXPERIENCE and is well-known in the community which
helped people like me overlook the political class endorsement and connections. I see her as an individual and voted for her because of the family she has. That being said, when I attended the debates, Cynthia smoked
her and held strongly against Joe but Cynthia didn't have enough EXPERIENCE.
I would have considered voting for Cory because of Judy UNTIL he printed misleading statements on his website and the ballot. Many told him to stop exxagerrating. He only changed his website "about" section AFTER we raised all the right questions! Tons of us don't always want the same people in power but EXPERIENCE counts as does integrity. He is just starting out and his first impression wasn't great.

With all due respect, I think it was more like you misinterpreted what was written, and so it was rewritten to clarify for those who didn't understand it the first time. When I read it, I never took it as misleading. Also, I would like to make the point that experience is definitley a plus, but with three or four other board members already being there, on eor two newbies wouldn't do any harm, and would ensure new blood. If the elders eventually burn out or become ill, what would happen if others aren't brought on board and trained?

I know for a fact Miller's husband is leading her campaign and he stood up against David Dreier! So, based on her ballot statement and her family, she earns my vote. If she isnt a good fit, then I'll work to vote her out next time.
I'll also respect Chuck Gomer because his leadership has helped my kids. Thanks for posting on here Mr. Gomer, it shows you really care. I know my kids positive times at Glendora Schools are because of those who have weathered the storms. So I'll pick Ferrell. Ironically, Cynthia is on that endorsement list too so I'll trust she has a good idea I can get behind.
As for the other option? I'm not going to let my Judy Nelson vote force-feed me a Cory because we need a "young voice." Judy Nelson should admit that she picked the wrong horse in this race based on the exxagerrating statements HE printed in the ballot alone! I commented on judy's old city council patch articles hoping for a response but it looks like I won't get one.

As for Tim Donnelly? I voted for him. I regret it. And for the record, the Tea Party political class got him in. Let's call it what it is. The fact is he just likes headlines. His picking a fight against the likes of Gil Cedillo and the Latino vote is the biggest mistake he made that will taint the tea-party. Have you seen the other Patch article on the Dream Act? The comments are shocking. My wife's family tells me bad stories about how they are treated even though their family goes back to Texas many generations. I don't think Tim's new district will re-elect him. I bet he is a one-shot freakshow I wish I never voted for and know the tea party has better to offer. My 1/2 mexican family is tea party too but we aren't people who encourage hate, we just want the country to be as it was, where community counts.
So, we will have new leadership next year in Judy Chu whether we like it or not because Glendora is changing for the better. It will be a place where my family will call home. It should always be as safe when I was a kid and welcoming to diversity like my kids offer.

So, your new leaders political class argument is not that great. It isnt about finances, the current board didn't sink us. With Blum and others our students have succeeded. The US government, state and local, budget cuts, along with many other banking/private greed culprits have taken the wind out of America BUT the recipe for success in our nation has always been and will always be EXPERIENCE gained after hard work. Lastly, Judy Nelson will have to work harder to earn my vote next time around.
Good thing I work the night shift, my wife would hate me blogging at night if I was at home. Hope everyone casts a vote. Our kids deserve it. And maybe one day I'll go to college so all this writing earns me a grade.

@ Facts a.k.a. Campaign Manager - your argument against Cory no longer holds any validity but, appears to be hipocritical - you say he misrepresented himself, but you are misrepresenting yourself under the misnomer of Campaign Manager! You also mislead voters into believing that you were campaign manger for Blum and Ferrel, thus possibly costing them votes with your comments. this being said, I do agree with you that the current board has done a good job so far with our kids' education - but I do wonder how the fast-changing times will affect their upcoming tenures? Why not elect in one of our own products of our own school district's educational system? He will bring fresh perspective. ( And this comes from a gal who tends to vote incumbents in for continuity! )

Did you know that 2 out of the 5 board members are products of Glendora Schools? Doug and Denice both attended GUSD schools and graduated from Glendora High School. In case you didn't know...

Not only that but both had/have kids in Glendora schools, so they not only have the perspective of Alum of GUSD but also as parents of students/Alum. They are indeed products of "our own district's educational system"! The experience of being a parent and having kids in the schools is very valuable in my opinion. I have 3 kids in GUSD schools right now. Next Year I will have 1 in HS, 1 in MS and 2 in ES. I want what is best for my children and I believe right now that is Blum and Ferrell. I applaud Cory for his willingness to serve but having the experience of being a parent and being on the board is currently what is needed. Inexperience is just a little to risky. I wish Cory only the best in his political aspirations and would certainly consider voting for him in a different time and place!
Also as an aside I woke up Sunday morning to discover an Irene Miller sign in my yard w/o permission. Makes me wonder how many times that has happened?

Juliet, I was being playful with my blog name.
If you actually thought I was the campaign manager that is hilarious! I was merely echoing a name I had read in a previous post where someone posted as "Facts" and "Facts 2" so I called myself "Facts aka (also known as) Campaign Manager"
And to be honest, you cost your candidate votes by posting aggressive combative comments on Blum/Ferrell's re-election FB page under your real name because you are on Cory's endorsement list!
Funny you actually think hard working honest citizens like Blum and Ferrel need a campaign manager or handlers like your boy Cory. See, unlike him, they keep thing simple. In Glendora we do that. And what is simple is integrity. What your candidate lacks.
So, why don't you try judging yourself first before you run off and make things up. Or is making things up a part of Cory's plan like his tax attorney profession on the ballot?

Juliet! Why don't you tell your candidate Cory to stop calling himself an attorney?!? He did it again in his donation report...since you are such a defender of what is right, how about persuade him to be TRUTHFUL? He can always use your description "Juris Doctor" or un-licensed law graduate.
