Fired Gay Coach Speaks to Citrus College Students
Campus’ Gay-Straight Alliance club reaches out to openly gay former water polo coach who alleges he was fired for his sexual orientation.
The Gay-Straight Alliance at Citrus College invited a special speaker to tell his story of growing up gay and why he firmly believes he was fired for his sexual orientaton.
Mitch Stein, the former Charter Oak High School water polo coach, spoke before a small group of students, Wednesday, Nov. 2.
Stein spoke of the difficulties of growing up gay.
“When I was growing up, we didn’t have the exposure that you have now,” Stein told the students. “When we had questions, or needed answers there was nowhere to go.”
Stein said he found solace while on the water polo team at Charter Oak, because he truly felt he belonged.
When Stein explained that after he was fired in August of this year, he was prepared to walk away, but received a phone call that changed his mind.
He learned of an athlete on the team who is gay and had been going through a terrible time at school. The athlete, at one point, tried to commit suicide multiple times.
Stein spoke to the student and made a deal.
“I said if I stay and fight, you’ll go to school,” Stein explained.
The athlete agreed and remains on the team and continues to go to school.
“It’s not just about passing laws, it’s about changing the social climate,” Stein said. “This is what I promised that water polo player and this is what I’ll do.”
Stein emphasized the importance of establishing Gay-Straight Alliances on all campuses as a means of breaking down intolerance towards gays.
“By going to protests, by having him [Stein] speak here, it shows how much we care about his cause and the LGBT community,” said Sara Acevedo, president of the Gay-Straight Alliance at Citrus.

Good to see you are covering this important topic. I grew up in Azusa and had no one to turn to when I was a young gay student in the late 70s.
I now live in Los Angeles and have Mentored LGBT youth with a the program Lifeworks at "The Center".
There is also The Trevor Project that is available to help save lives of gay youths that are dealing with thought of suicide.
You can go to the website of each organization to get more information on services that that provide.

Good to see you are also involved with caring about the kids on the waterpolo team and especially this one team member. You shouldn't have to hide who you are to fit in to school, society or anywhere else. I can see you are truly trying to make a difference and not use the "firing issue" as a money maker. Everyone needs to wake up and be open to changes and peoples different ways of living. Hopefully soon, Charter Oak will wake up and realize that they have made a mistake and hire you back. Kids need to know its ok to be who you are and not let others influence your ways. Come on Charter Oak District!!! I am sure there are other teachers and Admin who support Stein but feel they also will lose their job. Time for COUSD to come step up to the plate and do whats right and hire a coach who does well at his job and is liked by all players!
