CrossFit Finds a Home in Glendora

The strength and conditioning brand gaining popularity in the U.S. is heading to Glendora.

While there won't be a shortage of people trying to make good on their New Years Resolution at the gyms come the new year –  or even those just trying to work off the extra holiday pounds – a new gym boasting a brand new workout experience is coming to Glendora this January.

CrossFit Glendora, to be located at 124 S. Valencia Ave., is slated for an opening during the second week of January.

CrossFit is a strength and conditioning brand that combines a variety of workouts, including running, powerlifting, weightlifting, gymnastics, plyometrics and more. Since it was developed in the mid 90s, the exercise has been seeing a surge in popularity. In the last seven years, the number of CrossFit gyms have grown from 18 in 2005 to 1,700 in 2010.

“The workouts are always changing,” said co-owner and Glendora resident Marc Bauer. “You won’t find yourself spending time wondering what you’re going to do at the gym today. All the workouts are planned and written on board by a certified trainer.”

Bauer calls the varied CrossFit workouts “functional,” while also strengthening the entire muscle core.

“You’re not going to see a bicep curl in a CrossFit workout,” said Bauer. “You won’t do a bicep curl in any other moment during the day. Our workouts are geared toward what you do every day.”

Many of the workouts are timed, therefore adding a competitive element to the new sport, said Bauer.

The CrossFit methodology has been adopted by firemen, law enforcement agencies and military agencies.

Bauer, also a fireman with Los Angeles County Fire, said he takes his CrossFit workouts with him to the fire station as part of his own training.

According to Bauer, maintaining good form during workouts is critical to seeing the best physical results.

“It’s better to do a little and have good form than a lot, with horrible form,” Bauer said. “When I started, my knees started to bug me, but after two months I just felt more stable on feet.

Bauer said he and his business partner Josh Kniss decided Glendora would be a good place to start their business venture, as there are no cross fit gyms from Monrovia to La Verne.

The gym will host several small classes during the day. But at roughly $100 a month, CrossFit gyms are one of the most expensive gyms in the area.

“What you are paying for are results,” said Bauer.
